The political scavenging piffle artists are rampant again in Newport.
Publicity gluttons invent grievances. Then stir up maximum indignation and present themselves as purveyors of saintly truths. When the truth appears that there is no substance in their scare stories, they claim victory.
This is a standard Lid-Dem political stunt commended in their practices of raising inventive issues. They have been doing it for years in what has been mocked as ‘dustbin’ politics. For decades I've worked with well respected Liberal Democrats like David Hando who have the best interests of Newport at heart and who are not interested in such stunts. The Newport LibDems are at rock-bottom. Their General Election candidate in Newport East had the 38th worst LibDem swing when measured in percentage drop against them of all 40 Welsh seats in May. In the Bettws by-election they amassed 0.006% of the total poll. That was 7 votes in a poll of 1400. No wonder they try desperate measures to get attention.
They invented a plot to cleanse the streets of the homeless. It was fictitious. Newport has 40 years long record of compassionate and pioneering work for the homeless. Nothing has changed and spare provision of high quality is available. The propaganda is spread and the name of our city is dragged unfairly through the mud. When the truth emerges that the accusation is baseless, the LibDems claim victory. They boast they have reversed a non-existent threat. This is classic LibDem gutter politics.
This week they are at it again. The splendid three councillors for Caerleon are spending their councilors’ allowance to erect a very pleasing Christmas tree on Caerleon Common. It looks marvellous. Councillors Giles, Huntley and Suller had the support of a generous donor and the enthusiastic help of Caerleon people who, among other things, brought along baubles to decorate the tree. There were some doubt about the safety and insurance aspects of climbing the tree so the baubles decorate the fence that surrounds it. All very pleasing.
A LibDem from St Julian’s sniffed a political dirty trick opportunity. He mounted a social media campaign on ‘Health & Safety’ in the Daily Mail style. The fiction is spread. Sensible people recognised this as another pathetic stunt that invites ridicule to the city they hope to represent. No mention in their press releases of the work of the councillors and other local people without whom there would be no tree.
Caerleon people know better.
