Total of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan = 368
Ending the UK's war in Iraq was a non-event in our media. A few whispered self-congratulatory mentions from politicians but no-one had the effrontery to claim that the deaths of 179 British soldiers had been worthwhile. The Chilcot Inquiry will force the nation to visit the unpalatable truth. Our involvement was a mistake. We rightly fret over the demonstration in Syria and the Yemen. But we ignore the rotten regime that is our legacy in Iraq.
Demonstrations were renewed in Iraq on Friday May 13, "The Friday of Redemption," with banners demanding the removal of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, described as the most corrupt leader in the history of Iraq and calling for the formation of a new government comprising competent individuals whose hands were not stained by the blood of Iraqis or by corruption.
A new scandal is rocking the political scene in Iraq, involving the director of the security bureau of the prime minister, Abu 'Ali al-Basri, who is accused of arranging the escape to Iran of 12 Al-Qaeda leaders incarcerated in a prison in the city of Basra. The escape was carried out with the help of al-Basri's brother, who is in charge of security in the city. Rumours are rampant that al-Basri has also fled to Iran.
The involvement of the prime minister came to the fore in the wake of his appointment of a judge by the name of Nouri Hato al-Maliki, a relative of his, who issued an order dismissing an arrest warrant against al-Basri. One news agency found a letter from the prime minister ordering the closing of the investigation of al-Basri.
Al-Maliki called the young demonstrators "troublemakers and saboteurs." In response, the demonstrators said that any young demonstrator is "more honourable and more noble than any official in his [al-Maliki's] government.
Protests are taking place in the Sunni town of Falluja, about 35 miles west of Baghdad, and the Shiite district of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad. Police also reported smaller protests elsewhere in Baghdad and in several provinces.
The demonstrations are the latest in a series across Iraq, as protesters are inspired by uprisings in the Middle East. Iraq is still ranked among the four most corrupt countries in the world, according to Justice Rahim al-Uqali, who heads the ICC, the Iraqi ministers prefer to cover up corruption in their department rather than fight it.
A covenant for our soldiers is planned. The loved ones of the 179 fatal casualties should insist that the UK never embarks on any military adventure on the basis of lies or the vanity of politicians.
This article is very useful, thank you for sharing. And allow me to share articles too, it's about health and treatment. God willing
