I am hopeful Plashing Vole as I said in the meeting last night. We have a lucky combination of brilliant Letwin, the chutzpah of Ken Clarke and a Labour opposition that has no need to play to the gallery. Jack Straw and David Davis's intervention is not encourgaing. But it's time that 50 years of abject failure should be understood by all parties.

Is Labour going to co-operate on a more enlightened prisons policy? Jack Straw seems to be utterly reactionary on this (as on so many things) and he's making the running at least as far as press coverage goes. Why is it that Labour always appointed such rightwing Home Secretaries? Did it imply that the party assumed the voters were totally reactionary?
