Yesterday was a day to savour.
To increase the confidence of children learning Welsh as a second language, I was drafted in to Malpas Court School. My job was to answer the questions they had prepared. The children were great. They responded to my attempt at immersion Welsh that all appeared to understand. Some frantic body language and gestures helped in communication.
Having an outsider adds a little to make the exercise special. I live in hope that the seeds of interest will develop into a lifelong passion for mastering a second language. It did for me many years ago. My enthusiasm has never waned.
In the senior form they re-enacted part of a performance of the Chartist Rising that they recently did on the route the Chartist March of 1939.
They were very knowledgeable about the true significance of the sacrifice of the Chartists and the benefits it brought to all of us.
Diolch o'r galon. Plant Ysgol Llys Malpas.
Green earth
It's local. It's green. It's providing a good service.
I readily agreed to re-open the Johnsons Cleaners shop at the Handpost in the Stow Hill area of Newport West yesterday. The business has gone green. The previous process was smelly and polluting because of the chemical residue it produced.
The new process named 'Green Earth" is odourless and almost totally residue free. The shop is located is a very useful and lively shopping mini-hub of a dozen shops at the Handpost. It is adjacent to three groups of residential complexes that are mainly occupied by the elderly.
The convenient location is a major factor. The ironing board is special. It has suction pads that suck out the steam and improve the cleaning process. The photograph is a rare one of a sight my wife has never seen.
My other interest is as a customer. The service is always courteous, efficient and speedy. Good luck Johnson's.
Expenses damp squib
It went phut. The first publication of the new IPSA MPs expenses claim were published yesterday. The figures were badly reported or ignored.
The total of £3 million was quoted usually without any context on whether it was high or low. There was one league table I saw that compared totals paid. The Western Mail produced a map on their website. My own claim was one of the lowest in Wales. That is generally meaningless because I run my constituency in a different way to most MPs. Attention was concentrated on thoe who claim for tiny amounts. Why do they bother?
Always negative Buster. Always petty. The post clearly said it was located at the Handpost. Having lived in Newport since 1962, the charge of carpetbagger is not convincing. That's nearly 50 years compared to the five weeks residence of the Tory candidate on offer in May.
Having spent 15 years as a councillor and 23 as an MP, I believe I have a clear idea of the responsibilities of the two jobs. Spend some time 'searching' this site. You will find details of the campaigns on Warburtons and the Passport Office. If buster, you know of any opportunity I have missed to push the campaigns, perhaps you would let me. I and the other South Wales MPs would like to exploit them. What you will not find on this site in unnecessary negative stories about the city that can only make the problems worse.
Every meeting I have had with the Leader of the Council I have raised town centre issues. The effect of constant negative reports are not helping the city to attract trade.
On national and international issues, I have been elected six times by the people of Newport West as their representative. While I could always do more, I no regrets on my work or my campaigns.

"The shop is located is a very useful and lively shopping mini-hub of a dozen shops at Highcross".
it seems cardiff boy paul doesnt even know where the shop is located.
highcross or handpost.
i love how these national/multi national companies jump on the green bandwagon.
how is the liquid silicone and solvents manufactured [greenly]lol
i am convinced cardiff boy paul only lives in newport because its a safe labour seat.
anyone standing for labour could win this seat.
not seen very much in the bloggs about what your doing in your seat of newport.
just the usual afghanistan, pharmas and attacking anyone not from labour.
what happend to saving the passport office ,warburtons and the city centre.
i would like to see you fighting for us and not your personal interests that have amounted to nothing.
or is personal visits and openings all we get from our mp.
oh i forgot paul only does international work.anything to do with newport is for councillors to deal with.
unless it interests him.
