The media often claim Gordon Brown has cut spending for the military, eg Treasury cuts reduced spending on helicopters. Perhaps it should be pointed out more often that defence spending has increased considerably. eg a 20.7% real increase 1999-2008 using the SIPRI numbers. Or about 2.1%/year real terms increase on average since 1999. This is well in excess of the extra 8% to 13% costs of Iraq/Afghan "Peace Keeping and Operations".
