In July 1991, I was visited by Special Branch to warn me that I was on a list of names found in Limerick in the home of a known terrorist.
I wrote the above article in the Western Mail at the time anonymously in case the threat was serious, I did not want to provoke anyine. My view then and today is that its impossible to provide effective protection to 650 MP MPs 24/7. The risk is greatly exaggerated and MPs like everyone else are at greater risk of being involved to a road traffic accident than being murdered by terrorists.
We are all horrified by the dreadful brutality and senseless cruelty of the murder of Jo Cox. The tributes to her work have been moving and accurate. She was a lovely woman and a great inspiration. The causes she loved will be be promoted with renewed passion. That would be the best way to enrich her legacy.
