Hayat Family
Dreadful news of the tragedies of the deaths of five members of the Newport Hayat family.
They were involved in a road accident while on the Haj to Mecca. The city of Newport is bereaved. Few families have served us with the integrity and devotion of the Hayat family. I have known four generations of the family. Mohammed Hayat was a greatly respected patriarch of the family. He served with valour in the Indian Army in World War Two and suffered a period as a prisoner of war. He is pictured here chairing a meeting on international peace at the Newport Civic Centre. He passed away in 2005. One of his sons Doctor Ibrahim Hayat was elected as a Labour City Councillor in 2007. On a difficult day, Ibrahim topped the poll, above seven other candidates, at his first attempt. This is a measure of his popularity and the desire for the Newport West Labour Party to be representative of the whole city. The many descendants of Mohammed Hayat have served Newport in the professions and in politics.
There will be heartfelt sympathy today to the Hayat family in these terrible bereavements.
May they rest in peace.

To lose so many of your family at once is so tragic. My condolences to the Hayat family. The Newport community has lost a great deal.
