Couldn't agree more. How about Wales showing the way with an honour of its own? The Gorsedd is fine as far as it goes, but it's not really interested in the world beyond the arts and culture.

A civic honour awarded by a panel under the stewardship of the Assembly would by-pass all of the lord lieutenants and other state flunkies and establishment interests, and it could be a lot more meaningful to Welsh people than the ridiculous CBEs, MBEs, etc. which are dished out at present.
