Hail Clegg, Peter Hain and Graham Allen for the best speeches in today's tedious debate on the House of Lords. Their speeches were brave and honest. How long can we continue boasting about the quality of our democracy when we are heading to be the last country in the world to have hereditary chieftains in our legislature as a right?
There was a shameless parade of hypocrisy today of aspirant Lords, husbands of Ladies, sons of Lords niggling away at a worthwhile reform. They demand more time to debate the issue. None say how long. We already have ten to twelve days promised. How many days are enough? 20 Days? 30? Limitless? After three hours of debate today, no one had anything fresh to say. After 30 days the boredom would damage brains.
The bill is not perfect. None ever are. Serious amendments will make it acceptable. We can do that in ten days.
You should be more ashamed about the hypocrisy of your colleges who sold out democracy for cheap party politics.
