Bert Bale, long time Chair of the Newport Merchant Navy Association, passed away on Monday in the Royal Gwent Hospital. His friend Alan Speight has passed on the sad news.
This picture was taken on one of his proudest moment. He was in charge of the ceremony to recall the sacrifices of the Merchant Navy in war. The annual event takes place at Tower Hill London every September. Bert was the prime mover in setting up a fine memorial to merchant seamen in the heart of Newport. He has initiated an annual service of commemoration there on November 11th.
He led the campaign to bring the jolly boat from the Anglo Saxon back from the United States. It is now on display in the Imperial War Museum.
He was active in politics. He once stood unsuccessfully as a Conservative candidate in a by-election in the Gaer Ward. Political differences did not prevent cooperation with members of other parties including me. His final campaign was to erect a memorial to one of the youngest casualties in the last war.
Bert was a proud Newportonian, a tireless campaigner for recognition of the sacrifices of the Merchant Navy, a loyal friend and an inspiration to the causes he espoused.
For Bert Bale, one of the National Merchant Navy Association’s Vice Presidents and former Chairman of the Newport Branch of the MNA and for all other Seafarers We pray, O God for all seafarers as they fulfil the duties and face the dangers of their calling: the officers and men of the Merchant Navy; the Royal Fleet Auxiliary; the keepers of lighthouses and crews of lightships and weatherships; the pilots of our ports; all who carry out the services of docks and harbours; and those who man lifeboats and guard our coasts. Grant them your strength and protection and keep them in the hours of special need; for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.
Keith.
