Windfarms work 80% of the time. So do nuclear generators. Tory MPs revolt against wind power proves that right wingers are stupid.

@Paulflynnmp
On shore wind turbines are NOT 80% efficient! They generate at only approx 28% of capacity. Unlike nuclear!

@bernardjenkin This was scientific evidence to British Irish Economic Committee - not the Daily Mail propaganda bad science you feed on.

Those are two different things Paul,
There isn't any particular issue with saying that windfarms and nuclear both only work 80% of the time
but that
when they do work, they are not equally "efficient".

http://www.bwea.com/energy/myths.html
"Over the course of a year, it will typically generate about 30% of the theoretical maximum output. This is known as its load factor. The load factor of conventional power stations is on average 50%"

The load factor for onshore wind farms is about 30% and the load factor for nuclear is about 80%

On the other hands, nuclear produces waste that our best solution for is to stick in the ground out of sight and monitor for 10,000 years to be sure it doesn't leak and contaminate this island. It is a potential target for attacks and it is the most costly form of power generation known to man, with the vast majority of it's costs loaded on the back-end when they will have to be paid, despite not actually getting power from them anymore.

As far as I understand it, their best argument against wind, is that it isn't necessarily producing energy when it's actually needed.

Which is true, but it seems to me in my relative ignorance that all that means is when it is producing energy that the grid does not need, we need a kind of storage stage so that it can be kept and used when it is needed.

So, for example if we used it to get hydrogen from water, then we could use the hydrogen to generate power when there was demand and the waste from that, is water so no big problems there unlike nuclear waste.
