What should republicans say this year?
On Monday last week I had several invitations to speak on radio and television on the subject of monarchy. I turned them down. Not cowardice I hope, just sensible caution. If I said a syllable that could have been interpreted as a criticism it would have been seized on by the jackals of the tabloid press as a foul affront on the day of the anniversary. It was better to allow the infantalised sycophancy that was spewing from the media to induce nausea unchallenged. How much of it can the country stand?
The Commons will have a day soon to abase ourselves. There will be a debate. I will put in to speak. There should be a contribution from the quarter of the population of the country that has republican views. On the debate to wish Prince Philip a happy birthday, I had a few words to say. They were received with great enthusiasm in the House but a little outside.
The Queen has at least one virtue that I can praise with sincerity. She is doing a full-time job in her late eighties. She intends to continue to do it. That's a fine example to us all. Especially to the voters of Newport West.
how refreshing to read your views I was beginning to think that I was the only one who thought along these lines.More power to you
