From the infantalised dross of weekend television the quality of David Hare and Bill Nighy emerged tonight in Page Eight.
I believed every beautifully crafted word of it. Extraordinary Rendition was covered up by the British Government. A British Foreign Secretary told me that the Swiss MP Dick Marty who revealed the truth was 'a lunatic.' I have known the Dick well for ten years as a fellow member of the Council of Europe. He is man of intelligence, energy and integrity. He was proved to be right. The British Government was engaged in a cover up.
In the 2005 General Election David Hare came to Newport to follow me on the campaign trail. I assured that I did not have a campaign - just me and an Apple Mac in my front room. I took him to the Ffrwrwm in Caerleon. He begged me to ask someone to vote for me. i did. The person said he was voting LibDem. I asked him if he had met the candidate because she is a very fine woman. David Hare wrote a very funny helpful piece about my non-campaign in the Daily Telegraph.
The combination of David Hare and the truth on Government complicity with torturers was an irrestible menu tonight.
More intelligent drama please written by real writers.
Agree that this was a thought provoking and believable piece of television. Reminded me of the novel 'A very British Coup' By Chris Mullin (later adapted by Alan Plater for tv).
You may remember Paul that I 'strayed from the path' over the decision to go to war in Iraq - wonder if our erstwhile PM Mr Blair will ever get his cumuppence on this?
