A former UK Foreign Secretary told me that Senator Dick Marty was a 'lunatic'. Eastern European politicians contemptuously described his work as the Dick Marty Da Vinci Code. The Polish Government took steps to prosecute him. He avoided that with his immunity as a member of the Council of Europe (COE).
This morning Senator Dick Marty was praised for his courage and persistence. Pictured today at a meeting of the COE's legal affairs committee. Three international experts explained how Dick's report on what is euphemistically known as 'extraordinary rendition' forced Governments to tell the truth. Their airports and facilities had been used illegally to further torture of prisoners.
Tony Blair denied the truth. Our parliamentary processes did not reveal the truth but the courts did. An inquiry is now under way that should see the rejig our our secrecy procedures. For a start we should elect the members of our Security Committee. They are all appointed now. They let us down badly on Iraq. They were fed falsehoods and reported them to parliament. The result was that the UK joined Bush’s war and 179 British soldiers died.
Reforms will come. Thanks to the Council of Europe and the courage of Dick Marty.
The death penalty in the USA may be on its way out. Possibly with Obama appointments to the Supreme Court but probably for economic reasons. In Maryland it cost $37 million for each execution. Those are the cost of the legal appeals beforehand. It's cheaper to keep prisoners incarcerated for life. Again the right deed for the wrong reason.
